About Homeopathy

Homeopathy is both a science and an art and embodies what we envision as a truly twenty-first century medicine. It is a profound energy system of medicine which cleanses and stimulates the body’s own natural healing response or immune system. Homeopathy respects the wisdom of the body and recognizes that symptoms of ill health are expressions of an imbalance in the whole person.

A safe and gentle system of healing, it is used by over 200 million people worldwide to treat both acute and chronic conditions. Natural substances in the form of remedies are used in minute doses to stimulate the patient’s own healing response and the homeopath individualises these according to the totality of the patient’s physical emotional and mental symptoms.

The results, although gentle, can be powerful and long lasting.

It is suitable for everyone, even sensitive patients, from pregnancy, childhood and adolescence to adulthood and older age.

Homeopathy is a truly holistic and sustainable system of medicine that seeks to restore the patient to health in the gentlest, most effective and permanent way possible. Most people describe a greater sense of wellbeing, a stronger vitality, more peace and contentment and more energy after taking a homeopathic remedy.

The word ‘Homeopathy’ comes from the Greek for ‘similar suffering’. This reflects the key philosophic principle behind the homeopathic method: a substance can cause the very suffering it is capable of curing.

Everything from trauma and acute or short term illness to many types of chronic conditions can be effectively treated by Homeopathy.

It is impossible to list them all, however many people commonly seek homeopathic treatment for stress, anxiety, insomnia, depression, fatigue and headaches, period and fertility problems, pregnancy related conditions, menopause and children’s illnesses.

Other common conditions people seek homeopathic treatment for include ear, nose, throat and eye disorders, respiratory illnesses, digestive and urinary tract problems, bone, joint and skin conditions.

Homeopathy may also be effective where there is no specific diagnosis.

What are Homeopathic Remedies made of?

Homeopathic remedies are non-toxic, are made from various substances with the most common sources being flowers, plants, minerals, metals, insects, animal milks and venoms.
There are over three thousand homeopathic remedies and they come from a wide range of sources. The remedies are made from highly-diluted tinctures from plants, animals, and minerals and are prescribed in the form of lactose tablets or pills which stimulate and strengthen the body’s own healing response or immune system.

Safe and effective

Homeopathy is perfectly safe because the remedies are made from a very small amount of the active ingredient. Over two hundred and fifty years of practice, research and trials have proved the safety of this gentle system of medicine for both people and animals.

Homeopathy is safe to take with conventional medication and to use for babies, children and pregnant or breastfeeding women, who are under the supervision of a homeopathic doctor.

Gentle and non-addictive

They have a pleasant taste and come in pill, powder and liquid form. Unlike some conventional drugs, homeopathic medicines are gentle, natural, non-addictive and have no dangerous side-effects
Remedies are approved by the Irish Medicines Board which regulates all medicines in this country. They are made by strictly regulated Homeopathic pharmacies.

Law of Similars

The Greek physician and teacher Hippocrates (4th century B.C.) is generally regarded as the father of modern medicine. His methods went against the general thinking of the time and he was aware of two ways of healing the way of Similars and the way of Opposites. He emphasised the importance of accurate observation of the patient, saying: ‘I would rather know what kind of person has a disease, than what kind of disease a person has’.

The way of Opposites is well-known to all of us from conventional medicine: If you have a pain you are given a painkiller, if you have constipation you are given laxatives, and so on.

The way of Similars is rather different: a substance is given which, in a healthy person, would produce the same set of symptoms as those of which the patient complains.

This is the basic law of homeopathy: similia similibus curentur – ‘let likes be cured with like’. Based on this premise, the first homeopathic principle states that any substance that can make you ill can also cure you – anything that is capable of producing symptoms of disease in a healthy person can cure those symptoms in a sick person.

Samuel Hahnemann

A German Doctor Samuel Hahnemann (1755 – 1843) is the modern day founder of Homeopathy. It was Hahnemann’s contribution to take the ‘Law of Similars’ and organise it into a workable methodical system of medicine. He tested this principle of like curing like, initially with his experiments with Peruvian bark or Cinchona, which is a treatment for Malaria. He found that by taking regular doses of the substance Peruvian bark he developed symptoms of malaria. This was a turning point, as he had observed the ‘Law of Similars’ in action and he devoted the rest of his life researching and refining his methods to help develop the modern system of homeopathy we have today.

“I can’t manage without homeopathy. In fact, I never go anywhere without homeopathic remedies. I often make use of them.” Paul McCartney

The Consultation

The initial consultation takes approximately 1 to 1½ hour during which a comprehensive case history is taken. Follow up consultations take place 4 weeks later and last approximately 45 minutes.

On your first visit, I will take a detailed note of all your symptoms and a thorough medical and family history.

I am interested in you as an individual and the aim of the consultation is to get an overview, not only of your presenting complaint, but also of you as a person. I want to know your likes and dislikes, worries, fears, what makes your condition worse or better, possible triggers, when the problem started and so on.

I will also ask relevant and detailed questions about your appetite, sleep patterns, life style, sensitivities to the environment and temperament.

In addition I will look at aspects such as your energy levels, the way you may be affected by environmental factors such as weather, temperature, appetite, mood changes, anxieties and how you react to stress. I take time to listen to both emotional and physical symptoms and something you may think of as unusual or of no relevance may be of great value.

Based on this information, a remedy or remedies will be prescribed to begin the process of stimulating and strengthening the healing response or immune system. The remedy will be in liquid, pill or powder form and full instructions will be given as how the remedy should be taken.

Most complaints clear up quickly. Long standing or chronic conditions may take a while to improve although a sense of change should be felt from the beginning of treatment.

A follow-up appointment is scheduled to assess the progress and improvements with adjustments in the potency and dosage being made at that time. Depending on the duration and severity of the initial complaints appointments are generally extended to longer periods of time as needed.

Many patients will return once or twice a year to maintain the improvements or boost their overall immune response during cold and flu season.

The length of a course of treatment will depend on the individual, the type of complaint and the individual characteristics of your case. Homeopathy is a process of treatment. First aid and acute complaints generally respond quickly while chronic illness may require prolonged treatment. I will make an assessment of this at the end of your first visit.

All information is treated in strict confidence and conforms to Irish Law.
Homeopathic remedies in general do not interfere with other medication and may be taken safely under the supervision of a professional Homeopath.

The remedies may be used to complement conventional treatment and in some cases may alleviate unwanted side-effects of conventional drugs. An example is the use of Homeopathy to treat the side-effects of cytostatica and radiation used in the treatment of cancer.

Please tell me about any medicine or supplement that you take regularly and mention any dental treatment you may be having as it could affect your Homeopathic prescription.

Rosaleen has been my teenage daughter’s homeopath for a year and we are both thankful for her professional help. She devotes a great deal of effort into studying her case, weighing the options with keen intuition before deciding on the correct remedy. She has a lovely positive personality and my daughter found her very easy to talk to. She’s a great listener so as to pick up all aspects of how my daughter was feeling and taking the whole picture of her life into account, not just her localized symptoms. I would recommend Rosaleen as she is thorough, conscientious and her use of homeopathy benefits from her knowledge and years of experience.

After cynicism, apathy & I just haven’t the time; my wife talked me into going to see Rosaleen. In spite of all the so called negativity of those from within/outside the medical profession, it worked! For two years, I had tried various remedies of so called merit to clear up sinusitis, to no avail. I met Rosaleen; following a lengthy meeting [which felt like therapy] I was given two of what can only be described, as the iced balls you get on fairy cakes, to rest under my tongue, last thing at night and first thing the following morning, which benefited me no end. I took one step back and two forward as I got a heavy cold? symptomatic apparently, but even my sceptical self, considered it had improved [no sore throat] we met again and was given in her words something ‘stronger’ which cleared it up, now converted.

Did you know?

  • Over 30 million people across Europe use Homeopathic medicines.
  • Homeopathy is used by Royals, entertainers, sports people, actors and politicians.
  • The British Royal Family, Sir Paul Mc Cartney, David Beckham, Jennifer Aniston, Catherine Zeta Jones, Martin Sheen, Tony Blair and Bill Clinton all use Homeopathy.
  • It has been used in the past by Mahatma Gandhi who said Homeopathy “cures a larger percentage of cases than any other method of treatment and is beyond all doubt, safer, more economical and the most complete medical science.”
  • It has also been used by Mother Teresa, Florence Nightingale, W.B.Yeats, Vincent Van Gogh, Claude Monet and Pierre Renoir.

Is homeopathy safe?

Homeopathy is safe unless you self-prescribe incorrectly, not being mindful of the homeopathic view of health and disease. For instance, if you take too many homeopathic pills over a period of time it is possible to ‘prove’ a remedy – that is, to suffer from the symptoms that the remedy was supposed to cure if you do not follow correct procedures. This is the danger of self-prescribing and over-the-counter prescribing without professional advice or a clear understanding of how homeopathy works.

Is it a form of herbalism?

While a proportion of homeopathic remedies are based on plants and the herbalist prescribes on the individual, the principles that govern the two therapies are quite different. Due to the method of preparation homeopathic remedies are completely safe and non-toxic; nor are they based solely on plants, also using animal milks and venom, metals, and minerals.

Is it a form of vaccination?

Often people say that they understand homeopathy to be like a vaccination in that the patient is given a small quantity of the disease he already has in order to make him immune to it. This is not true. Homeopathy and vaccination have similar, not the same, concepts and very different practices. Vaccines work on the physical body in a very specific way, in that they stimulate the immune system directly to produce specific antibodies as if that person had contracted that particular disease; in so doing they are, of course, stressing the immune system. Homeopathic remedies affect the energy patterns or the vital force of a person and by so doing stimulate the body to heal itself; they are administered orally in a diluted and safe dose as opposed to being introduced directly into the bloodstream. The remedies are not tested on animals and do not have side-effects.

The Irish Society of Homeopaths is the registering body for homeopathy in Ireland. The Society both sets and maintains the standards for homeopathy and homeopathic practice. Registered members are bound by the Code of Ethics and Practice of the Society and participate in the Continuing Professional Development programme of the Society. This ensures that professional homeopaths practice in an environment which ensures the highest quality healthcare for patients.
The Minister for Health and Children has published a report on the regulation of complementary medicine in Ireland. The report recommends a system of voluntary self-regulation in line with practice in other European countries. Homoeopathy regulated by the Irish Society of Homeopaths is one of the few professions that meet all of the recommended requirements. Having properly trained professionals who have graduated from an accredited course and who are then insured and registered will ensure the highest standards of treatment for patients.
